How to Choose Wine Under $20
5 min read
Great value rarely lives where demand is loudest. Napa Cabernet and Burgundy carry a fame tax; the same dollars go dramatically further in regions still building their reputations. Under $20, the smart move is drinking where the hype isn't.
Regions that overdeliver
For reds: Spain's Garnacha and Rioja crianzas, Portugal's Douro blends, Chilean Cabernet, Argentine Malbec, and southern-Italian Montepulciano d'Abruzzo routinely punch far above their price.
For whites: Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand or Chile, Spanish Albariño, dry German Riesling and unoaked Chardonnay (look for "unoaked" or Mâcon on the label) deliver freshness that costs triple elsewhere.
Read the shelf like a pro
A second label from a famous producer shares the winemaking team at a fraction of the price. A slightly older vintage of an affordable red is a bonus, not a flaw. And a real discount off a verified original price — the thing this store is built on — is worth more than any adjective on the back label.
Finally, drink the pair: buy two bottles of the same grape from different regions and taste them side by side. It's the fastest wine education money can buy, and under $20 it's a cheap one.
