Grapes and places that overdeliver

For reds: Malbec from Argentina, Cabernet and Merlot from Washington State and Chile, Garnacha and Rioja Crianza from Spain, Montepulciano and Primitivo from southern Italy, Côtes du Rhône from France. For whites: Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and Chile, Albariño and Vinho Verde from Iberia, Pinot Grigio from northern Italy. For bubbles: Cava and Prosecco, both well under $20 for the good stuff.

Signals worth trusting

A named region beats a whole-country label. A verified critic score of 88 or more is meaningful at this price. A producer who makes a lot of one wine usually makes it consistently. A recent vintage matters for crisp whites and rosé; for everyday reds a year or two older is fine.
