Cartlidge & Browne began in 1980 in Napa Valley, when Tony Cartlidge and Glen Browne started a wine company with no vineyards, no winery and no formal winemaking background. Working out of a garage, they were among the earliest American practitioners of the garagiste approach borrowed from Bordeaux, buying grapes rather than land and choosing fruit vineyard by vineyard. That buying-not-owning philosophy still defines the brand, which sources across California's viticultural regions to make varietally clear, fruit-forward wines. The house lineup today covers Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with winemaking led by Sonoma native Russ Fish. The winery is based in Sonoma, California, and donates a share of on-premise case sales to CORE, a nonprofit that provides financial relief to food and beverage workers with children facing a health crisis or disaster.
