Napa Valley is Cabernet Sauvignon country: rich, powerful and priced accordingly. Sonoma County is more varied — Russian River Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Alexander Valley Cabernet, Dry Creek Zinfandel — and often better value. Paso Robles makes ripe, generous reds; the Central Coast and Monterey supply much of the state's good everyday Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; Lodi is the home of old-vine Zinfandel. A wine labeled simply 'California' blends fruit from several of them and is usually the most affordable option.
Sunshine is the constant. California wines are riper, fruitier and softer than their European counterparts, which is why they are so easy to enjoy young.
