What it tastes like

Dark cherry and black plum up front, then espresso and dark chocolate, finishing with clove and nutmeg from the oak. It is rich and a little plush rather than lean or herbal.

You’ll like this if…

You like well-known California Cabernets in the $12-20 range - the smooth, dark-fruited, lightly sweet-oaked style rather than a firm, tannic Bordeaux.

Why buy it

At $14.99 it is a well-made California Cabernet from a family winery that also makes Napa-appellation wines, with real French oak aging behind it and a consistent house style from vintage to vintage.

Best for

Grilled and smoked meats, burgers, and red-sauce Italian food; a reliable case-stack red for parties.

Style

Full-bodied, dry California Cabernet with ripe dark fruit, moderate acidity, supple tannins and clear sweet-oak seasoning.

Drinks like

Sits in the same lane as other value California Cabernets from Lodi and the broader state appellation; a shade richer and more oak-driven than a typical Chilean or Washington Cabernet at the same price.

Experience level

Beginner-friendly. Nothing here requires study - it is soft, fruity and easy to enjoy on its own.

Pairs well with

juicy hamburgers on a brioche bun with butter pickles and fresh arugula · smoked brisket with buttery mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus · grilled sirloin or skirt steak with a peppery crust · baked ziti, lasagna, or sausage-and-pepper pasta · aged cheddar, gouda, or a wedge of parmigiano · portobello mushroom burgers or eggplant parmesan

About the winery · Michael Pozzan Winery ›

Michael Pozzan Wines is a family operation in Napa whose roots go back to the late 1800s in Piedmont, Italy, where Michael's great-grandfather planted vines. His grandfather later moved to Sonoma and planted 35 acres of Zinfandel in 1948 near Healdsburg, and Michael spent his boyhood summers in those vineyards. After years working in wine imports and distribution, he left his sales job in 1990 and released his first vintage of 200 cases in 1991, building the business alongside his wife Mary Ann. The winery now works with growers across California and is run with the help of their two sons, Dante and Matthew. The Dante label is named for the eldest son, Michael Dante Pozzan, and is the family's approachable, everyday tier.
