Banfi was founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani. The estate developed in Montalcino with a strong focus on research, Sangiovese clonal selection and modern winery design. Banfi's Montalcino winery was inaugurated in 1984, and the Horizon winemaking area followed in 2007. Today, Castello Banfi is associated with both Brunello di Montalcino and Super Tuscan wines such as SummuS.
